Niagara Falls In The Winter

Friday, March 7, 2014

We have always wanted to see Niagara Falls in the winter.  With this year being so cold and snowy, we thought it might be a good year to get this one off our bucket-list.  Additionally, there were reports the Falls were mostly frozen over.  That turned out to be untrue, likely a Tourist Bureau ploy to get people there when they would normally stay home.

The Falls are about a 4 1/2 hour drive, so we got an early start, arriving mid-day to bright sunny 40 degree conditions.  Perfect!

Even though they were not “frozen over”, the Falls were spectacular as the following pictures will attest to.

Both of the falls had huge accumulations of ice at their base, and nature was also busy creating its ice sculptures along the shore, check these out!

So, what could top this you ask?  Well, we went back after dark when the lights were on.

The light beams from the falls lights combined with the foggy air made a scene that looked like a flying saucer had landed.

This was a pretty neat trip.  A couple of tips if you come here.  We stayed at the Quality Hotel on Murray St. located within an easy walk to the falls with free parking, which can run up to $15/day in lots near the falls.  It was clean and cheap, but sound insulation was not so good, making it a bit too noisy for our liking.  Secondly, you do not need much time here unless you want to gamble or take in some of the many chinsey attractions.  The usual summer stuff is closed.

We are planning our next big adventure for later this year, so save or bookmark this link!
